Automatic fire extinguisher of Tiger I

Tiger I はエンジンで発生した火災を検知すると、自動的に消火液をエンジンに噴出する Selbsttätige Feuerlöschanlage [自動消火装置]を備えていた。

構造と仕組み

消火液ボトルは[上図の番号1]、戦闘室のエンジンルーム隔壁に垂直方向で取付けられていた。
このボトルには 四塩化炭素 が充填され、7気圧にしておく必要がある。4気圧以下になると、充填するかボトルを交換する様に指示されていた。

自動消火の仕組み
自動消火の動作は主に、消火液ボトル、ソレノイドスイッチ、サーモスタットスイッチ、消火液スプレーノズルが関わる。
消火液スプレーノズルはエンジン上部のキャブレターに2つ、ガソリンポンプに1つ、エンジンクランクケース下面部に1つ、その近くに同数のサーモスタットスイッチが取り付けられている。
サーモスタットスイッチは約95℃を越えると、ソレノイドスイッチが閉じて消火液ボトルのバルブを7秒間開放し、スプレーノズルから消火液を噴出させる。
サーモスタットスイッチの温度が下がるとソレノイドスイッチが開き、バルブが閉じる。
Tigerfibel には、消火液は約7秒間を計5回噴出できるが、もしサーモスタットスイッチの温度が下がらない場合はボトルが空になるまで噴出は続くと記載されている。
手動消火の仕組み
上記の自動消火のソレノイドスイッチは、蓄電池の電流によって作動している。もし回路や他の原因で不具合が発生して自動消火が作動しない場合でも、ソレノイドスイッチの上にあるボタンを押すと、自動消火と同じ約7秒間バルブを開放し消火液を噴出させる事ができる。
Tigerfibelでは、もし自動消火が働かない場合は装填手がそのボタンを押す様に指示している。なお火災が発生すると操縦手に警告が為される事は後述するが、操縦席からは自動/手動に関わらず消火装置を作動させる事はできない。

Warnlampe [火災警告ランプ]
Tigerfibel, page 16 に自動消火装置とそれが作動した際の操縦手と装填手への指示が以下の様に記載されている。
Wenn es brennt,
leuchtet dir Warnlampe neben der Fahrer sehklappe, spritzt die Anlage Löschflüssigkeit (wenn sie es nicht tut, muß der Ladeschütze auf den Knopf am Feuerlöscher drücken) und Du mußt sofort Kraftstoff und Motor abstellen, nicht Vollgas geben wie bei anderen Kraftfahrzeugen.
Sonst werden die Löschgase abgesaugt, die den Brand ersticken sollen. Die Flüssigkeit selbst löscht nicht.
Tigerfibelには、その警告ランプの場所は Fahrer sehklappe の近くに在ると書かれているが、調査の当初は操縦席の周囲で該当するランプについて思いつかなかった。
ここでイギリス陸軍が 捕獲したTiger I の調査レポートを読むと、エンジン火災時に操縦手へ赤色で点灯して警告するランプが Visor slit の真下にあると記載されていた。またその警告ランプの周囲に操縦手への操作指示文が描かれていると判った。

The driver has no control over the extinguisher mechanism, but is warned by a red light, coupled in parallel with the solenoid, situated just below his vision slit. The light carries the warning "Fire in engine - immediately throttle down to idling speed."
上記のイギリス軍の調査レポートは、火災警告ランプの周囲のドイツ語文字を「Fire in engine - immediately throttle down to idling speed.」という意味であると記載している。
この画像ではドイツ語文字の判読は難しいが、ドイツ人の友人から
「Feuer am Motor - sofort auf Leerlauf gehen!」
ではないかとアドバイスをもらった。

この規範には Tiger Iの自動消火装置の設置と点検に関する指示が記載されている。
Die Signallampe ist im Blickfeld des Fahrers anzuordnen. Sie leuch-tet bei richtiger Schaltung auf, wenn die Anlage selbsttätig oder von Hand in Tätigkeit gesetzt wird. Dauerndes Aufleuchten deutet auf Schalt fehler oder Beschädigung eines Wärmefühlers hin.
この規範によると、 Signallampe = Warnlampe を 操縦手に良く見える場所に取り付ける事を指示しているが、必ず Visor slit の真下に取り付ける様に指示をしていない事が判る。

軍事科学「機甲」: Military Engineering, Armor, Textbook for secondary school

軍事科学「機甲」は1945年1月発行の日本の中等学校向け教科書。
1943年(昭和18年)12月の通牒で、中等学校では修練の教科が週4時間となりそのうち2時間を「軍事科学」に割り当てる事となった[※参考資料]。「機甲」 の教科書はその「軍事科学」の授業で用いられたと1つと思われる。

Tiger I tank paper craft in 1944
The original Tiger I papercraft photos are from an acquaintance in Germany.
I heard this completed 1/20 scale Tiger I papercraft was contributed by a collection of Walter J. Spielberger and had been displayed in the Panzermuseum Munster until recently.
I researched the history of the Panzer papercraft in WW2 German and wrote two articles for TAMIYA NEWS Magazine before. A publisher produced several papercrafts of German tanks in WW2, German citizens could purchase them by proving their ID at OKH office. The Tiger I papercraft was in 1944.

The information card of this displayed Tiger I tells below. However as my research, I think the description of the papercraft purpose is not correct "Die Modelle dienten zur Ausbildung im Panzererkennungsdienst. ".
